The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) was established to encourage large organisations in the UK to adopt energy-saving measures. Under this scheme, businesses must conduct energy audits every four years to evaluate the energy consumption of their buildings, operations, and transportation.
We are currently in ESOS Phase 3. Updates from the consultation published in July 2022 introduced significant compliance changes, including the announcement of Phase 4.
The compliance deadline for Phase 3 has been extended to June 5, 2024. However, the Environment Agency has stated that no enforcement action will be taken against organisations that register with the new IT system by this date and submit their compliance notification by August 6, 2024. Regulatory enforcement will resume after this extended period.
Our CIBSE-certified Low Carbon Assessors team is thoroughly knowledgeable about the latest changes in ESOS Phase 3. We are here to assist you in navigating the requirements and maximising the benefits of the ESOS scheme.
Businesses must comply with ESOS Phase 3 if they:
✔️ Are registered or operated in the UK or as a UK establishment.
✔️ Employ 250 or more staff.
✔️ Have an annual turnover exceeding £44 million and a balance sheet greater than £38 million.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and public-sector organisations are typically exempt. However, with the introduction of Phase 4 of ESOS, the government is expected to revise the turnover and balance sheet thresholds to align with SECR regulations, potentially requiring more businesses to participate in ESOS.
Our ESOS compliance service guides you through every step, from gathering data on energy usage across your buildings, transport, and operations to conducting detailed energy assessments.
We perform on-site energy audits, produce ESOS-compliant reports, and ensure you capitalise on the scheme’s benefits. Our expert lead assessors will incorporate any updates introduced by the Environment Agency following the Phase 3 consultation, ensuring your compliance is seamless and up to date.
Cost Savings and Efficiency
Conducting commercial energy audits helps businesses uncover areas of energy wastage, allowing them to cut costs by improving energy efficiency based on audit recommendations.
Environmental Impact
Commercial energy audits help businesses reduce their carbon footprint by identifying ways to decrease energy consumption, supporting corporate sustainability objectives, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
Improved Operational Performance
Energy audits for businesses frequently reveal operational inefficiencies, which, when addressed, can enhance productivity and operational performance by ensuring optimal equipment and system functionality.

Optimising heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems can save energy.
Improving the efficiency of processes and machinery in manufacturing and industrial settings can lead to significant energy savings.
Enhancing building insulation and sealing helps maintain optimal temperatures, reducing the need for excessive heating or cooling.
Our energy assessors will evaluate the building's envelope, including windows, doors, and other openings, to determine if energy is lost through these points. They will also review operational and management practices.
The process begins with an initial meeting to understand the client's objectives, operations, and energy usage patterns. This step is essential for defining the scope of the audit.
Data collection involves gathering historical energy consumption data, equipment specifications, and operational schedules. This information is crucial for analysing energy usage.
An on-site inspection is conducted to observe and measure the energy performance of equipment and systems. This step includes using specialised tools to gather accurate data.
The collected data is analysed to identify energy-saving opportunities. This involves comparing current energy usage with industry benchmarks and best practices.
A detailed report summarises the findings and provides recommendations for energy efficiency improvements. This report includes a cost-benefit analysis and an implementation plan.
Businesses may require support to implement the recommended changes after the audit. This could involve project management, training, and ongoing monitoring.
